5 Things to Know BEFORE You Rent a Moving Truck

March 26, 2019, 2:45

Renting a moving truck can be a great option for customers in Illinois and Indiana who need to transport multiple items, heavy items, large equipment, and more. But before you sign on the dotted line and drive away with the keys, consider these five important things to know before you rent a moving truck–

1. Is There Insurance Coverage?

Perhaps one of the most important questions to ask when renting a moving truck is in regards to insurance coverage. If you’re involved in an accident, who will pay for damages? Often times, a driver’s personal insurance coverage will cover rental truck operation, too; however, you should verify this within your insurer in advance and you should ask the rental truck company if they offer additional coverage.

2. How Are You Being Charged?

Make sure that how much you owe and how any fees will be assessed is clear. Some truck rental companies will charge by the hour; others by the day or week. In addition to the daily rental fee itself, you’ll probably also be liable for gas costs. Ask for a detailed quote that breaks down all expenses.

3. Can Another Person Operate the Vehicle?

Before you assume that your friend or family member is welcome to operate the rental truck too, be sure to ask. Often, extra drivers are only covered under an insurance policy if an additional fee is paid, which means that if you’re in an accident while the non-covered driver is behind the wheel, you may be liable for damages out-of-pocket.

4. Are There Any Additional Costs?

Ask about additional costs, including fees for adding another driver, equipment and supplies fees, and fees for returning the vehicle late. Depending on the company, you may also face a fee for not refilling the gas tank, causing damage to the interior of the vehicle, and more. It’s best to fully understand what you may be facing, financially, before you sign a rental contract.

5. Can You Drop Off the Vehicle at Another Location?

Of course, if you only need the vehicle for a few hours to do some tasks around town, dropping off your vehicle at the same location may not be a big deal. But if you’re moving, it may be nonsensical to assume you’ll drop off the vehicle at the same location from which you picked it up. As such, make sure that you are in the clear to do this, and ask if there will be any additional fees.
