Make Your Move To A New Place With Less Stress

No matter how far you are going – across the country or across the city – moving to a new home or apartment can lead to anxiety and stress. Having to pack up everything you own, leaving behind family and friends and embracing change is both exhilarating and exasperating.

Check out some of the ways you can reduce the burden of moving.

Be an organized superstar. There’s nothing more anxiety-inducing than being scattered and all over the place when taking on a big project, such as a move. Take the time from Day 1 to put a process in place. Having a checklist to keep track of what needs to be done whether it’s with pen and paper or on your smartphone will help you see what’s left and keep track of your progress. Packing early and labeling boxes will also help you stay on track.

Timing is everything. While a Sunday move may seem like a great idea, remember that banks and government offices won’t be open. Try to plan for a weekday trek as that will help you be able to get any last minute things done without worrying about places being closed.

Help is vital. Don’t shoulder the entire load of moving! Bring on friends and family to assist – just make sure to give them plenty of notice and details of what you need help with. Check out more about getting help in our blog post.

It’s not a race. Sure, you want to get it done as soon as possible, but make sure you have blocked in enough time to pack, clean, drive and unpack with realistic expectations. Rushing around and wearing yourself out will just make the whole moving process even more stressful.

Rest and refresh. Take care of yourself throughout the weeks of planning, moving and unpacking. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and eating well-balanced meals. Build in doing something stress-reducing, fun and relaxing as well. Maybe that means adding in extra sessions of yoga, taking a long walk, watching a movie or going out to a nice dinner.
